I was inspired by Simon Sinek’s book “Find Your Why” and Laura Berman Fortang’s book “Now What?” in creating this Life Resume tool. I highly recommend you check out both of their books if you’re stumped on a career change or if you just want to know yourself better.
This tool is a new way of looking at your experiences. It is not a personality quiz or aptitude test. It is not a magic wand or a quick answer.
There is no easy way to discover who you are, what you enjoy, and figure out what you actually want to do with your life or career. You have to do the work.
This tool will help you. It will show you things about your life you’ve never seen before. It will illuminate patterns you never knew existed.
And by seeing these patterns, you will have a much clearer sense of direction as you pursue a big change in career.
Because I know that the only way you’ll really get the benefit from this is by owning it and doing it, I am NOT including any fancy templates or printables.
You’re a fully capable, resourceful adult human being. You can type on a computer or write in a notebook. And, by doing just that, you’ll get way more benefit from this than if I handed you a workbook to fill out.
Big revelations don’t come from filling out a workbook. OK, sometimes they do. But I’ll bet you can all think of a time you learned something and felt incredibly accomplished because you did the actions and figured it out for yourself.
Make this your own.
Embrace it fully.
Make the most of it.
What you put in is what you will get out.
What might be possible if you showed up ready to do the work?
How can you make sure that you commit to this and really do the work? Write it down.
Name 3 things you’re going to do to make sure you follow through and get the full benefit of this tool.
I have included a video of one of my clients working through this process with coaching from me. It is a huge boost and benefit to have a friend, colleague, or coach look over your finished product with you. They will see things you can’t see because they will bring a different perspective.
If you’ve tried brainstorming your way through this, and it hasn’t gotten you anywhere, you need their perspective. Your own has not been working or you would know what to do by now!
Set aside the time required to give this tool its due diligence. What you put into it, you will get out of it. The more focused and committed you are when filling this out, the better results you will receive. It’s all up to you.
If you’re sick of spinning your wheels and want to get some actual traction on the question of “what the hell do I ACTUALLY want to do?” then put in the time to do this activity completely. I promise you’ll receive insights that will help you to answer that question.
